I've done 3D renders with NVIDIA Iray with incredible results and since OctaneRender requires a CUDA enabled NVIDIA video card like Iray, this should help you out.
After a day or so of troubleshooting, I successfully got an NVIDIA GTX 1080ti in an Akito Node Thunderbolt 3 with an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adaptor to work with a MacPro 2013 running MacOs 10.13.2.
